比較
形容詞・副詞は比較の仕方によって語形が変化します。この変化の事を比較変化といいます。
比較変化の原則
[１] -er, -est型
例 taller, tallest bigger, biggest happier, happiest
[２] more, most型
例 more useful more important most quickly most selfish
[３] 不規則な変化
例 good/well, better, best little,less,least bad/ill,worse,worst
原級
比較して同じ程度のものを表す場合は、原級を使います。
[１] as＋原級＋as ... 「...と同じ位〜」
Jake can dance as well as Zeb. （ジェイクはゼブと同じ位上手に踊れる。）
[２] not as[so]＋原級＋as ... 「...ほど〜ではない」
Jake cannot sing so[as] well as Zeb. （ジェイクはゼブほどは上手く歌えない。）
[３] ... times as 〜 as 「...倍の〜」
Dan has three times as many CDs as his sister.
（ダンは妹の３倍の数のCDを持っている。）
「２倍の〜」という場合はふつうtwo timesではなくtwiceを使う。また「半分の〜」という場合はhalfを使う。
The yard of Mike's house is twice as large as that of Dan's.
（マイクの家の庭はダンの家の庭の２倍の広さだ。）
Dan has saved half as much money as his sister.
（ダンは妹の半分の貯金をした。）
[４] as ... as possible[one can] 「できるだけ...」
Zeb danced as attractively as possible before his girlfriend.
＝ Zeb danced as attractively as he could before his girlfriend.
（ゼブは彼のガールフレンドの前で、できるだけ魅力的に踊った。）
比較級
２つのものを比べて「どちらがより〜だ」という時には比較級を使います。
[１] 比較級＋than ... 「...より〜だ」
Ann got up earlier than her mother this morning.
（アンは今朝はお母さんより早く起きた。）
[２] 比較級の強調
比較級を強めるときはmuch, far, still, また口語ではa lotなどを用いる。
Jake is much shorter than Zeb. （ジェイクはゼブよりずっと背が低い。）
[３] The＋比較級..., the＋比較級〜. 「...すればするほど、ますます〜」
The more deeply I knew Dan, the more I admired him for his honesty.
（ダンを知れば知るほど、ますます彼の正直さに感心させられた。）
[４] 比較級＋and＋比較級 「だんだん〜、ますます〜」
The summer in Tokyo is getting hotter and hotter year after year.
（東京の夏は年々ますます暑くなっている。）
[５] the＋比較級＋of the two 「２つのうちで〜な方」
Dan always takes the smaller of the two.
（ダンはいつも２つのうち小さいほうをとる。）
最上級
３つ以上のものの中で「最も〜だ」と言うときは最上級を使います。
[１] the＋最上級＋of[in] ... 「...の中で最も〜」
Friday night is the busiest night of the week.
（金曜の夜は週のうちで最もにぎわいます。）
Phoenix is the most famous city in Arizona.
（フェニックスはアリゾナで最も有名な都市である。）
[２] 同一の人・物についての比較
This lake is deepest at this point. （この湖はこの地点が一番深い。）
同じ湖の中のある部分と他の部分を比較している。このような場合はtheが付かない。
[３] 形容詞・副詞を強めるmost
He is a most important person. （彼はとても重要な人物だ。）
このmostには最上級の意味はない。「大変、とても（＝very）」の意味。
[４] 最上級の強調
最上級を強めるときはmuch, by farを使う。
Zeb is by far the best dancer of all. （ゼブは、皆の中でずば抜けてダンスが上手だ。）
[５] the＋序数詞＋最上級... 「〜番目に...」
Canada is the second largest country in the world.
（カナダは世界で2番目に大きい国です。）
比較の書き換え
最上級は、原級、比較級を使ってほぼ同じ意味を表す事ができます。
例文： Time is the most precious thing of all.
（時間はあらゆるものの中で最も貴重である。）
☆原級を使って

＝ No other thing is as precious as time. （時間ほど貴重なものはない。）
☆比較級を使って

＝ No other thing is more precious than time. （時間より貴重なものはない。）
| 比較級＋than any (other) ＋単数名詞 比較級＋than anything[anybody] else |
＝ Time is more precious than anything else. （時間は他のどんなものよりも貴重だ。）
