分詞構文
基本的には「分詞が接続詞と動詞を兼ねた働きをする構文」です。 主に書き言葉として使われ、文脈上様々な意味を持ちます。
分詞構文の用法
<理由> 「〜なので」を表す場合
Being big, the mall has all kinds of stores.
→As[Since/Because] it is big, the mall has all kinds of stores.
(そのモールは大きいので、あらゆる種類の店が入っている。)
現在分詞 Being 1語で、接続詞・主語・動詞の役目を兼ねている。
<時> 「〜する時に、〜している間に、〜した後で」
Walking along the street, I came across Andy.
→When[While] I was walking along the street, I came across Andy.
(通りを歩いていたら、アンディにばったり会った。)
Finishing writing the report, I went out for a walk.
→After I finished writing the report, I went out for a walk.
(レポートを書き終えて、散歩に出かけた。)
<同時[付帯状況]> 「〜しながら」
The tornado hit the area, causing heavy damage to the crops.
→The tornado hit the area, and caused heavy damage to the crops.
(竜巻がその地域を襲い、作物に大きな被害を与えた。)
<同時[付帯状況]>を表す分詞構文は接続詞を使って書き換えられない場合が多い。また、次のようにwithに導かれることがある。
The old man was fast asleep, folding his arms.
=The old man was fast asleep with his arms folded.
(その老人は腕組みをして、ぐっすり寝ていた。)
<条件> 「(もし)〜ならば、〜すれば」
Turning left, you'll see the City Hall.
→If you turn left, you'll see the City Hall.
(左に曲がると、市役所が見えます。)
否定の分詞構文
分詞構文を否定するには、NotまたはNeverを分詞の前に置く。
Not knowing what to do, he asked his teacher for advice.
→As he did not know what to do, he asked his teacher for advice.
(どうしていいかわからなかったので、彼は先生にアドバイスを求めた。)
分詞構文の時制
分詞構文が主節よりも前の時を表す場合は、「Having+過去分詞」で始める。
Having finished lunch, she took her dog for a walk.
→After she had finished lunch, she took her dog for a walk.
(お昼を終えて、彼女は犬を散歩に連れて行った。)
なお、この分詞構文の否定形は、notの場合「Not+having+過去分詞」の語順になるが、neverはhavingの前後いずれにも置ける。
Never having seen her[Having never seen her] for a long time, I didn't recognize her.
(長い間彼女に全く会っていなかったので、彼女の顔がわからなかった。)
受動態の分詞構文
受動態の分詞構文は、「Being+過去分詞」が基本形だが、たいていはBeingが省略されて、過去分詞から始まる。
(Being) Seen from the sky, the bridge appears more beautiful.
→If it is seen from the sky, the bridge appears more beautiful.
(空から見れば、その橋はもっと美しく見える。)
( Having been) Written in haste, the letter has a lot of misspellings.
→As it was written in haste, the letter has a lot of misspellings.
(急いで書かれたので、その手紙にはミススペリングが沢山ある。)
分詞構文の慣用表現
Frankly speaking 「率直に言うと」
Strictly speaking 「厳密に言うと」
Generally speaking 「一般的に言えば」
Judging from ... 「…から判断すると」
Talking of ... 「…と言えば」
Considering ... 「…の割には」
Assuming ... 「…とすれば」
